This green commemorative plaque records: 8 to 12 High Street Circa 17th century, this building is reputed at different times to have been a bishop's palace and the residence of the great engineer Sir Cornelius Vermuyden. It was Marchant's Ironmongers from 1899 to 2004.
Cornelius Vermuyden (1595-1677) was a Dutch engineer renowned for his drainage schemes in England and Ireland, significantly transforming low-lying wetlands into arable land. His work at the Fenlands was particularly influential, altering the landscape and agriculture of East Anglia.
