Corn Mill

Water mill, horizontal-wheeled

In the valley of an E-W stream. The mill, which had been operated by seven generations of the Gannon family, is described as having a wheel (diam. c. 1.5m) with wooden ladles made from round wood hollowed into cups on the up-stream side. The wheel was laid horizontally and the stream (Wth c. 1.5m) which had been narrowed to a nozzle (dim. c. 0.2m) directed at the wheel. The mill-house is now removed, but the mill-wheel is now at NMI, Turlough, Co. Mayo. (Knox 1906-07, 268-9) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
