Compton Castle is a fortified manor house in Devon where the Gilbert family still lives inside the National Trust property. Sir Humphrey Gilbert sailed to Newfoundland from this home, and his crest shows a squirrel feeding on nuts. The castle kept invaders out with portcullises, arrow slits and drops of boiling oil, while the kitchen stayed separate because fire could swallow the whole hall.

The National Heritage List for England records Compton Castle as a registered park or garden at Grade II. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
