This blue commemorative plaque records: St. Vincent Formerly known as Forton Barracks this was the home of the Portsmouth Division Royal Marine Light Infantry from 29th March 1848 until 1st August 1923. The Barracks became HMS St. Vincent Naval training establishment from May 1927 until Dec. 1968. St. Vincent School was established on this site in 1974 and became St. Vincent College in 1987.
Forton Barracks, later known as HMS St. Vincent, served as a significant Royal Marine Light Infantry base from 1848 to 1923 and subsequently as a naval training establishment until 1968, playing crucial roles in British military history.
