This green commemorative plaque records: The Treaty of Ripon. Near this site once stood Nunwick Prebend House where in October 1640, when Charles I had been ruling without a Parliament for 11 years, the Treaty of Ripon was signed. This Treaty, between the King and the Scottish Covenaters, resulted in calling the "Long Parliament", which substantially curtailed the powers of the English Monarchy. Recorded plaque organisation: Ripon Civic Society.
The Treaty of Ripon, signed near this site in 1640, led to the convening of the Long Parliament, marking a significant shift that reduced the absolute power of the English monarchy under Charles I.
