The Tudor house was reportedly constructed for Margaret Beaufort, the influential mother of King Henry VII, who played a significant role in the establishment of the Tudor dynasty. The building, formerly known as "Gilpin House," is also associated with the satirical poem about John Gilpin’s ride to Ware by William Cowper.
