This commemorative plaque records: Near this site in 1776 the first commercial beam engine to the designs of james watt was erected by messrs boulton & watt for messrs bentley & co this tablet was unveiled by the right hon. the earl of northesk 27th may 1959 it was erected by the directors of british rolling mills ltd in co-operation with the newcomen society Recorded plaque organisation: British Rolling Mills Limited.
James Watt's innovative beam engine, first commercially installed here in 1776 by Boulton & Watt for Bentley & Co, significantly advanced industrial machinery and contributed to the efficiency of steam power during the Industrial Revolution.
