This blue commemorative plaque records: Brixworth Union Workhouse. This workhouse opened in 1837 at a cost of £5,800. Designed to cater for paupers in a population of 13,000, it usually held about 150, with separate quarters for men, woman, children and vagrants. There was also an infirmary and chapel. Brixworth Union Workhouse, established in 1837, exemplifies the harsh conditions of Victorian workhouses designed to house and control paupers under the Poor Law Amendment Act.
