This blue commemorative plaque records: Lieutenant Dennis Arthur Copperwheat GC. Awarded the George Cross for heroism displayed on 22nd March 1942 whilst serving on HMS Penelope. He led a party of men to scuttle a burning ammunition ship. This averted potential damage to the Valletta Grand Harbour during the Siege of Malta, June 1940-December 1942. Lived at 46 Park Avenue. Lieutenant Dennis Arthur Copperwheat was awarded the George Cross for leading a mission to scuttle a burning ammunition ship on March 22, 1942, thereby preventing significant damage to Valletta Grand Harbour during the Siege of Malta.
