This blue commemorative plaque records: Commemorating the Official Opening of the Wey & Arun Junction Canal at The Compasses on 28th September 1816 by the 3rd Earl of Egremont, also the Official Opening of the new Compasses Bridge on 2nd October 2016, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the original opening. The Wey & Arun Junction Canal, officially opened in 1816 by the 3rd Earl of Egremont, facilitated trade between the River Thames and the south coast; its bicentennial in 2016 was marked by the opening of a new bridge at The Compasses.
