This blue commemorative plaque records: 37 - 49, Pinfold Street. On this site from 1665 to 1794 were two houses, owned by the town, where the needy could lodge. They were replaced by a workhouse, where the inmates were required to work for their keep. The new building included a manufactory, cow shed, stone breaking yard and prison. It closed in 1839. This site was historically significant as it housed two town-owned lodgings for the needy from 1665 to 1794, later becoming a comprehensive workhouse that included various facilities for labor and confinement until its closure in 1839.
