This black commemorative plaque records: The Black Gate. Principal Gateway to the Castle built 1247-50. Upper two storeys built in seventeenth century. Restored, notably by R.J. Johnson 1883-84. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Black Gate served as the principal entrance to Newcastle's castle, constructed during 1247-50, and has been a significant defensive structure and symbol of the city’s medieval fortifications; its restoration in the late 19th century by R.J. Johnson helped preserve this historical landmark.
