This blue commemorative plaque records: The Ramparts. You are standing on a gun platform raised in 1548 by a French force under General D'Esse, to defend Jedburgh against the English. The town and Abbey had already suffered great damage in 1544 and 1545 during the campaign known as "the Rough Wooing", designed to force the Scots to marry their young Queen Mary to Edward, the son and heir of Henry VIII. The Ramparts were constructed in 1548 by French forces under General D'Esse to protect Jedburgh from English attacks during "the Rough Wooing," a conflict aimed at securing a marriage alliance between the English and Scottish monarchies.
