This blue commemorative plaque records: The Battle of Burn Wynd - 1601. On Rood-Fair Day, thirty armed men mostlyTurnbulls, pursuing an ancient feud, forced their way into the burgh near here at the Burn Wynd Port. They challenged their enemy Sir Thomas Ker who lived in the tower in the Market Place. The burghers took up arms and a bloody affray ensued. The townsfolk won the day, but Sir Thomas Ker was amongst the dead. Recorded plaque organisation: Royal Burgh of Jedburgh.
The Battle of Burn Wynd in 1601 marked a violent clash between Turnbull clansmen and local burghers led by Sir Thomas Ker, highlighting the persistent feudal conflicts in Scottish Borders; though the townsfolk emerged victorious, the event underscored the dangers of private feuds within urban centers.
