Mansion House, Comlongon Castle: a 15th Century tower house later shaped into a 19th Century country house in Dumfries and Galloway. The tower part is the oldest identity in the name: a small, defensible house made before comfort became the point. The later mansion part shows what such places did when danger eased; they grew rooms, gardens and pride. The point is that Comlongon is not one building but two ages of living, with the older tower still named inside the newer house.
