Cockpit Hill is a substantial earthwork mound built during the Norman settlement of the North West, preserving the shape of a medieval motte castle in Westmorland. The mound still rises from the ground as a defensive landmark from the post-Conquest period, even though the names of its builders have faded from memory. It is a scheduled monument protected by Historic England, and the earth itself remembers the weight of the people who shaped it.
