Cockpit Hill, medieval motte castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Cockpit Hill is a substantial earthwork mound built during the Norman settlement of the North West, preserving the shape of a medieval motte castle in Westmorland. The mound still rises from the ground as a defensive landmark from the post-Conquest period, even though the names of its builders have faded from memory. It is a scheduled monument protected by Historic England, and the earth itself remembers the weight of the people who shaped it.
The National Heritage List for England records Cockpit Hill, medieval motte castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
