Clyne Castle stands on a Mumbles hill overlooking Swansea Bay, built in 1791 by Richard Phillips and later enjoyed by the Vivian family, whose guests may have included Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill and King Edward VIII. William Graham Vivian shaped the gardens in the 1860s, and the view still drops from lawn and woodland into the bright curve of the bay. The castle later became Neuadd Gilbertson, a student hall beside another building on the hill, before returning to private apartments within protected grounds.
