What is recorded here

West Lodge still stands beside Cluny Castle in Aberdeenshire, a Post Medieval building reduced to a thin rectangular shadow on the estate. It may have been a guardroom, a gateway house or a small residence for someone who watched the main castle rather than lived grandly inside it. That much smaller role makes it easier to imagine: a lamp lit at dusk, boots on stone, a door opening onto dark ground. The lodge does not need to be famous because it preserved the shape of a boundary, and boundaries are where estates become alive.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Cluny Castle, West Lodge as Lodge (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
