South Lodge still stands beside Cluny Castle in Aberdeenshire, though no date or purpose has survived to explain why it was built. The main castle took the glory while the lodge waited out centuries of rain and neglect. Perhaps it guarded a gate, housed a keeper or gave a traveller a dry night before the long road north.
