Cloncaird Castle began as a stark sixteenth-century tower beside the Kelsie Burn before Henry Ritchie rebuilt its front into a grand country house in 1814. The walls still hold an armorial panel from 1585, yet local memory points to Walter Mure and a dark deed involving Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean. That violent shadow lingers beneath the later elegance, reminding visitors that grandeur often arrives only after blood has washed the stones clean.
