Clochan in Fán

Clochan

What is recorded here

Clochan in Fán hides beneath a large field clearance cairn in County Kerry, where two or three stone foundations still wait under layers of forgotten labour. People may have built small rooms there, then pulled the stones away to clear land for growing food. The cairn covers the truth but cannot erase the shape of human hands that first arranged the rock.
Foundations of 2 or 3 clochauns (Macalister 1899, 232; Curran no.10). Site now occupied by large field clearance cairn. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1457. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 5 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
