Clochan in Fán

Clochan

What is recorded here

Clochan in Fán, County Kerry, holds the buried foundations of two or three small stone dwellings, now smothered beneath a large field clearance cairn. People may have stood at that spot, pulled stones from the ground and built a tall pile to clear the land for farming. The ancient rooms vanished under human labour, transformed into a marker of ordinary work rather than a remembered home.
Foundations of 2 or 3 clochauns (Macalister 1899, 232; Curran no.10). Site now occupied by large field clearance cairn. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1457. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
