Clochan

What is recorded here

Clochan in Com Dhíneol Theas, gleann Fán is a destroyed clochaun near the summit of Beennacouma in County Kerry, Ireland. Macalister recorded it in 1899, but Cuppage’s 1986 survey no longer treated it as a standing feature. The mountain may have kept a small chamber, a hidden doorway or a forgotten prayer place before people stopped using it.
Macalister (1899, 278) recorded a destroyed clochaun near the summit of Beennacouma. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1444. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 5 August 2013
