What is recorded here
Clifford Hill rises fourteen metres above the River Nene, a massive Norman earthwork guarding the old ford between Little Houghton and Little Billing. Its steep sides still hold the memory of men who watched the water for danger, while the south ditch bears the scars of landslips that forced them to dig again. Centuries later the same flat summit became a bowling green, turning a military stronghold into a place of leisure without erasing the shadow of the castle beneath the grass.
The National Heritage List for England records Clifford Hill motte castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Clifford Hill motte castle was built in the 12th century, likely by a Norman lord as part of the post-Conquest expansion of military and administrative control in England. It is important as a scheduled monument, reflecting the strategic and defensive role of motte-and-bailey castles in the medieval landscape.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
