The Cliff face at Brough of Birsay consists mainly of basaltic lava flows and is part of the older volcanic formations of the Orkney Islands. It is notable for its columnar jointing and dates to the Mesozoic era, around 180–160 million years old, formed through the cooling and contraction of ancient lava flows.
