What is recorded here
In pasture, on the W end of a ridge on a S-facing slope with a steep drop down to a ravine on the N, S and W sides. A roughly circular area (c. 31m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 1.05m; ext. H 4m) NE-SSE, by a natural scarp (H 4.75m) SSE-SW and elsewhere by the edge of a ravine which drops steeply down to the river below. The interior is level and in pasture. A ledge (Wth 5-6m) outside the scrap S-SW gives ramp-like access to a possible entrance (Wth c. 1.6m) at SW. A drop to the ravine also occurs to the S of this ledge. There is a second possible entrance (Wth c. 2m) at NE between the bank and the edge of the ravine. A low linear earthen bank (L c. 11m) extends E along the edge of the ravine from the NE entrance. The cliff-edge fort is mentioned in the 1840s as Lissagowlane Fort, in the SW end of Buddaghauns (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 2, 6). It is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m). A standing stone (KE058-043002-) is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map immediately to the E of the cliff-edge fort. A rath (KE058-044----) is c. 60m to the N on the opposite side of the ravine.
