Overview
Clare Priory was founded in 1248 as the first English house of the Augustinian Friars. Suppression in 1538 led to its conversion into a private residence, but Augustinians bought it back in 1953; medieval cloister work, later domestic rooms and modern religious use now occupy the same riverside building.
Why it was built
Richard de Clare established the friary beside the River Stour for the newly arrived Augustinian order. Its earliest buildings provided worship, study and communal living before the house was reorganised under different religious authorities.
People and work
Edward II changed its formal connection in 1326, and Sir Thomas Barnardiston turned the suppressed property into a home in 1604. Later Baker family ownership is recorded through stained glass and a remarkable miniature copy of the furnished house.
How it changed
The Reformation ended the first Augustinian community and domestic use reshaped the priory for more than three centuries. Irish Augustinian friars recovered the property in the twentieth century and developed present-day worship and retreat work.
What survives
A medieval doorway, vaulted cloister entrance, part of an old stair and late fifteenth-century hall beams remain within the plastered house. Seventeenth-century panelling, later rooms, stained glass and tall chimneys record its long residential phase.
Why it mattered
Clare is important not only as the order's first English foundation but also for its rare return to Augustinian hands. The building makes visible the full cycle from friary to house and back to religious community.
