Mortimer sold his mother’s ashes to a cement firm in 1923, then walked the coast until he found a cist and returned them. The chamber sat unnamed on both counties, waiting for someone stubborn enough to carry death back to water. Men called him mad, but the coast kept his secret and gave the woman back.
