Cist in Glencolumbkille North

Cist

What is recorded here

Cist in Glencolumbkille North is a damaged rectangular chamber built from single upright slabs, measuring 1.55 metres east-west and 0.58 metres north-south. It sits inside a disturbed cairn in County Clare, where loose stone heaps on either side suggest people dug through the centre to reach what the chamber held. A prone slab to the northwest may be the capstone they removed, leaving the dead or the treasures exposed before the site was forgotten.
Situated in the centre of a disturbed cairn (CL010-222001-). Documented and reported to the National Monuments Service in 2006 by Elizabeth Gills. This damaged rectangular cist (1.55m E-W; 0.58m N-S) comprises single upright slabs on each side. Another slab lying prone immediately to the NW of the cist may be its removed capstone. On either side of the cist are loose stone heaps, presumably offcast from the digging out of the cairn’s centre in order to reach this cist and its contents.
