Cist in Coolnatullagh (burren By., Carran Par.)

Cist

What is recorded here

Gortaclare Mountain still holds the ghost of a cist on its southern shelf, where three parallel slabs bite into the earth beside a possible burial mound. Most of the box-like structure appears modern, yet those older stones suggest people once placed the dead beneath that sun-warmed rock. The mountain keeps both truths at once: new hands building on top of old hands, memory layered like sediment.
On a broad S-facing shelf on the lower slopes of Gortaclare Mountain. A number of upright slabs form a box-like feature most of which appears to be relatively modern however, three stones deeply set and parallel at NE may be the remains of a cist. A possible burial mound (CL006-042017-) lies c. 50m to the ESE. (Carey 2009, 124) Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 14 September 2021
A small cist tomb, likely dating to the Early Christian or Bronze Age; its partially surviving stone setting suggests a local funerary or commemorative function, though wider significance is not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
