What is recorded here
Four and a half metres east of the cairn, five leaning slabs still mark a chamber never capped. The stones tilt inward as if listening, leaving the east side open to the valley wind. They may have held a dead person, or they may have measured the shape of the valley itself.
The steep-sided valley known as An Gleann Mór extends NE from Dunquin between Croaghmarhin to N and Coumaleague Hill to S. Its upper reaches are now covered by blanket bog and provide only rough grazing for sheep.
(5) Located 4.5m to E of the cairn, this feature consists of a small rectangular 'cist' defined by 5 upright slabs which incline markedly inwards; there is no trace of a cap stone and the structure is open to E. The feature measures c. 1.85m x a maximum of 1.45m internally, and the stones would range from 1.2m to .65m in height if erect. It is possible that this is some form of cist grave. (Fig. 10)
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 24. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A cist burial, likely dating to the Early Christian or Iron Age period. Its location in a remote upland valley suggests a possible association with early monastic or isolated domestic activity in the region.
This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
