Church (in runs)

Situated on a slight bluff in a fairly level landscape with a small NE-SW stream just to the SE and a shallow valley extending off to the SW. The parish church of St Imoge or Shemoge is within a circular graveyard (diam. 34m) defined by earthen bank and hedge. The name is derived from St. Díomán of Clonkeen, Co. Limerick (LI014-007001-), a hermit of the Céli Dé. His death is recorded in 811, and his feast was celebrated on the 10th December (Ó Riain 2011, 266-7). The church is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 12.15m E-W; 6.65m N-S) with the walls reduced to a height of 1-1.3m. There is an opening now at the E end of the S wall, but no features are visible apart from a subrectangular granite font (ext. dims 0.72m x 0.66m; H c. 0.45; int. dims 0.45m x 0.43m; D 0.23m) at the SW angle. There is a rectangular cairn (dims. 5.1m E-W; 4.5m N-S; H 1m) attached to the E wall. St Imock's Well or Shemoge Well, where patterns were held on the 10th of December (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 88) is located c. 375m to the S.
