Church (in Ruins)

Roughly in the centre of a graveyard (MA071-142002-). This church is depicted on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps as a rectangular building (c. 14m E−W; 7m N−S), indicated as ‘in Ruins’ on the 1931 edition. The remains are reduced now to low wall footings (Wth 0.9m; H 0.4m), surviving to a height of 2-3 courses. The interior ground surface is uneven and stony underfoot. The W half of the church is engulfed in dense blackthorn scrub. Two sycamore trees grow at the E end. A 12th-century date for the church is indicated by a carved sandstone block (MA071-142004-), originally a capital of a Romanesque doorway (pers. comm. Con Manning, 2009) which now serves as a gravemarker, set upright in the ground to SW of the church. A Man-made underground passage (MA071-142003-) is located in an adjoining field c. 50m to SW.
