Church in Coolnatullagh (burren By., Carran Par.)

Church

What is recorded here

Prominently sited on a hillock in a fertile valley at the SE foot of Gortaclare Mountain. A rectangular area (int. dims. 10m E-W; Wth 1.6m) defined at S, W and N by a low but wide grassed-over stony bank, possibly representing the remains of a church. Several large unworked boulders are dumped on the interior at E as a result of field clearance. Described by Carey (2008, 55) as an oval cairn (max. diam. 18m E-W) with a large oval-shaped depression. A children's burial ground (CL006-042006-) is named on the OS 6-inch maps in this area and may be represented by some flags lying c. 3m to the NE.
