Chilham Castle is a rare living archive where a Norman keep from 1174 still stands beside a Jacobean manor completed in 1616 for Sir Dudley Digges. The polygonal tower may occupy an Anglo-Saxon fortification, while the hexagonal house opens across the River Stour valley with terraces shaped by later owners. Edward II dined there in 1320, art collectors lost paintings in 1938, and people still inhabit the oldest chamber. History has not closed; it is waiting to be witnessed.
