Childrens Burial Gd (Disused)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Gd (Disused) is a sub-circular raised area thirty metres across in County Cork, Ireland. Grass and forgotten time have swallowed every marker, leaving only a one-metre scarp and shallow fosse to hint at the shape of what was lost. A holy well sits twenty metres to the east-southeast, still giving water beside the lane and road that border the grave. The children are not named, but the land still holds the edge of their rest.
In pasture. Sub-circular raised area (diam. 30m) bounded by lane to E; road to S; defined by scarp (H 1m) and shallow external fosse to W and N. No grave markers noted; heavily overgrown. Holy well (CO121-079002-) c. 20m to ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
