What is recorded here

Maughantoorig holds a children's burial ground beside the Fairy Stone, where unbaptised babies slept beneath pasture grass. Men digging nearby ridges abandoned the work when their hands turned sore, as if the dead children refused further disturbance. The field has remained quiet pasture ever since, keeping its small graves hidden under grass and rain.

In pasture, on a gentle N-facing slope. In the 1940s it was recorded that 'unbaptised children were buried here' (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). According to local information, the burial ground occupies the NE corner of a field and is adjacent to a large boulder, known locally as the 'Fairy Stone' (KE060-030002-). Traces of cultivation ridges abut the field boundary on the N side of the field. According to local information, the digging of the ridges was abandoned when those digging developed sore hands which was said to be due to interfering with the burial ground. According to Dennehy (1997, 170), this land has 'since been used only for pasture'. There is a ring-barrow (KE060-030001-) c. 15m to the E, in the adjacent field.
