Children's burial ground in Kilkea Upper

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Kilkea Upper holds a child burial ground and chapel marked only by a faint crop shadow in the field. Fitzgerald wrote in 1906 that the oblong building stood in the middle of the field with no headstones, reserved for unbaptised or stillborn children. The absence of markers does not diminish the place; it concentrates the sadness and suggests a community that accepted loss without display.
Fitzgerald records a Children's burial ground (KD037-037003-) and chapel (KD037-037002-), described an 'an oblong building ... in the middle of the field ... No headstones exist and the place is only used for the interment of unbaptised or stillborn children' (1906-8, 120-1). According to Barrett, 'aerial photograph (GB89.AG.16) shows an oblong positive cropmark that coincides with hachuring on the OS-6inch 1909 map and locates the site of the church'.
