What is recorded here
On the hill crest in Ballynagraigue, a low earthen bank still circles a raised grassy field where small stone mounds sleep beneath the turf. The children may have belonged to a nearby household, a passing trade route or a forgotten village, yet the care taken to shape the ground suggests love rather than abandonment. The wide sky and distant land remain visible from the edge, as if the circle was drawn to hold small lives inside a place large enough for the whole world to look down on them.
Situated on the crest of a hill, with extensive views in all directions, this site consists of a circular area enclosed by an earthen bank. The internal diameter of the site measures 33m N-S, and 35m E-W; the bank is low and measures c 5m wide. The exterior height of the bank varies from .4m-1.6m, and its internal height .3m-.8m. The internal area is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and contains small low mounds of stones, now grassed over. It is marked on OS maps as 'Children's Burial Ground (disused)'.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 874. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
