Cloonygowan holds a small rectangular enclosure where unbaptised children were buried because church law barred them from consecrated ground. Plain stones mark the plots, while quartz pieces placed on some graves express an older belief that bright stone could protect the dead. The site still lies between a farmshed and overgrown pasture, near the ruins of a possible church and a bullaun stone, making its exclusion both tragic and strangely persistent.
Children's Burial Ground is recorded as a archaeological place in County Mayo. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
