Five hundred and twenty metres south west of Chideock Manor, water still circles a castle hall in Dorset. The moat is not a decorative ditch but a boundary drawn around power, kitchen, chapel and bedroom. It is listed as a scheduled monument, which means the state believes the site deserves protection, not that anyone may wander it freely. To stand beside it is to remember that castles were not only grand but practical, defensible and alive.
