Charleville Railway Station

Detached double-height railway goods shed, built c. 1850, with three-bay front and five-bay rear, trackside, elevations, having lower single-storey office to north gable, latter with recent flat-roofed extension. Now in use as office. Pitched slate roof with timber shuttered eaves, timber bargeboards and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched artificial slate roof with timber bargeboards to office. Random rubble limestone walls with tooled cut limestone quoins, front elevation having red brick impost course, with red brick relieving arches to openings. Snecked rock-faced limestone walls with tooled cut limestone quoins to addition. Camber-arched window openings to upper north gable and to east elevation, having tooled cut limestone voussoirs and surrounds, cut limestone sills and timber-framed casement windows. Square-headed loading bay door openings to front elevation, with replacement timber battened doors. Square-headed door opening to office, with tooled cut limestone voussoirs and surrounds and timber panelled door with overlight. Sited to north of station, on west side of railway line. Water tower on rectangular plan to south-east, having cast-iron water tank and snecked limestone walls, with blocked segmental-headed openings to west elevation and blocked segmental arched opening to north gable.

A finely-crafted goods shed attached to Charleville Railway Station and retaining its original character in features such as well-executed stone work and timber casement windows. A nearby water tower contributes positively to the setting of this much reduced railway station complex. Charleville Station was opened in 1849, early in the development of the railway network, and, on the evidence of the historic Ordnance Survey, was for a time known as Rathluire Railway Station.
