Charles Wyville Thomson was a pioneering Scottish naturalist and professor who significantly advanced the field of oceanography through his deep-sea expeditions and discoveries. His work on the Challenger Expedition from 1872 to 1876 laid foundational knowledge for understanding marine life and oceanic environments.
