Sir Charles Lyell was a prominent geologist who significantly influenced the development of modern geology through his work "Principles of Geology," advocating for uniformitarianism, which posits that the same geological processes operating in the present also operated in the past. W.E. Gladstone served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom four times and was a dominant political figure in the late 19th century, known for his extensive career in politics and his debates with Oxford professor Benjamin Jowett.
