This brass commemorative plaque records: King Charles II and the unfortunate Duke of Monmouth dined at the house formerly standing on this site 15 September A.D. 1665
King Charles II was a monarch who restored the English monarchy post-civil war; James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, was Charles II's illegitimate son and a claimant to the throne, executed for leading a rebellion against his uncle, King James II.
