This stone commemorative plaque records: Site of The Greyhound Inn Where in July 1647 King Charles I met his children James, Duke of York, Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Princess Elizabeth. This was arranged by the Parliamentary leader, Sir Thomas Fairfax. The local people decked the King's route with green boughs and strewed it with flowers.
King Charles I of England, King James II of England, Lord General Thomas Fairfax, Sir Duke Henry Stuart KG, and Princess Elizabeth Stuart were central figures during the English Civil War; their meeting at The Greyhound Inn in 1647 highlighted the complex political and familial dynamics of the period.
