This bronze commemorative plaque records: On Sunday 27th June 1647. King Charles of blessed memory, having been deprived of the ministrations of his Church for a year and two months, while a prisoner of the Army of the Scots, worshipped in this Church. His chaplains present were Dr Hammond & Dr Sheldon

King Charles I of England was monarch during the English Civil War and is remembered for his conflict with Parliament leading to his execution; Henry Hammond and Gilbert Sheldon were prominent clerics who served as chaplains to King Charles I, later becoming significant figures in the Church of England.
