This green commemorative plaque records: Erected in 1584, Porch House is Northallerton's oldest house, Charles I stayed here as a guest in 1640 and as a prisoner in 1647. Recorded plaque organisation: Northallerton Town Council.
King Charles I of England (1625-1649) was a monarch whose reign ended in civil war and his execution for treason; he is remembered for his belief in the divine right of kings and his conflict with Parliament.
