Charles I blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Charles I and the Civil War On the 5th May 1646 at 7.00 a.m. Charles I arrived at 'The King's Head' from Stamford, disguised as a clergyman. Here he spent his last hours of freedom before being taken to Kelham to the Scottish Army Commander. He was later handed over to the English Parliamentary Army.

King Charles I of England (1625-1649) is remembered for his absolutist rule and conflict with Parliament, which led to the English Civil War; his attempt to escape capture, as evidenced by this plaque, highlights the turmoil of that period, ultimately resulting in his execution in 1649.
